I stated my career as a lawyer in commercial private practice. I moved to Canada not long after I had qualified as a solicitor in the UK and had to go through the process of requalifying in Canada. I ended up practising in the field of corporate finance but not long after that my husband and I moved back to the UK, specifically to Cambridge. At that point we had started a family and I found part time work reviewing research contracts at the University. This work quickly developed into legal work and I started the first in-house group of lawyers in the University. I was Joint Head of Legal Services, running the legal team on a jobshare basis for 15 years (see http://www.cam.ac.uk/women-at-cambridge/profiles/joanna-cheffins-helen-jackson).. Since then I have worked as a consultant and from June I will be bursar at Wolfson College, Cambridge. I would be very happy to help Newnhamites with an interest in the in-house legal profession, particularly in the not-for-profit sector, and/or an interest in the Higher Education administration business. And I'm also happy to reassure anyone that you don't have to stick to the plan in order to have a satisfying and rewarding career!
