Pat Phillips

My first career was 30 years in the Civil Service and Diplomatic Service. Much of this was spent abroad, including serving as HM Ambassador to Angola, and postings in Washington, The Netherlands and Jordan.  Alongside this, I did an MBA by distance learning at the Open University. After taking early retirement, I worked part-time for a while, delivering training courses on negotiation and policy skills, doing various voluntary jobs and an MA in Military History by distance learning from the University of Birmingham. After the Covid pandemic, I started my second career as a teacher working first in a primary school in Pimlico, Westminster then at a sixth form in Tottenham. Having retired a second time, I now volunteer as a tutor in both schools, one day a week each.  I also sing in two choirs and play the tenor horn in a brass band.

I have taken part in several Newnham careers events and am always happy to discuss careers in public service or teaching or career-switching later on.
